Step 1: Preparing the Pooni
The first step in turban tying is preparing the pooni, where you get your turban cloth ready. Tie one end of the turban to a doorknob or a secure place, and then twist the cloth tightly while pulling it towards you. This process ensures that the fabric is properly aligned and free of wrinkles, making it easier to handle when you start wrapping. A well-done pooni is key to achieving clean larrs (layers) in your turban.
Step 2: Tying Your Base
The next step is tying your base, which involves wrapping a 1-meter keski (small turban) around your head, followed by a fifti (another smaller piece of cloth). This base layer is essential as it helps flatten your head's surface, ensuring that your hair stays in place and doesn't interfere with the main turban. A firm and well-placed base provides stability and comfort, making the turban more secure.
Step 3: Tying the Turban
Now it's time to tie the main turban. Start wrapping the turban cloth around your head, focusing on keeping each larr (layer) clean and even. As you wrap, make sure the back of your turban is neat and the larrs are aligned. The way you manage the larrs determines the final appearance of the turban, so take your time to smooth out any wrinkles or uneven folds.
Step 4: Perfecting with Baaj
The final step involves using a baaj (a type of comb) to clean up any imperfections. This step is crucial for ensuring that your turban looks sharp from all angles. Use mirrors to check your turban from every side, and make sure the loopi larr (final covering layer) is neatly placed. The baaj helps in adjusting and perfecting the turban's look, making sure that each larr is in place and the turban sits comfortably on your head.
